II Timothy 4:1-5

I. What is an “Evangelist?”

  1. “Evangelist.” euangelizo “to bring good news” - euangelion “good news - gospel.” euangelistes “one who brings goods news.”
  2. “Minister.” - servant (II Timothy 4:5; Acts 6:4).
  3. “Preacher.” - herald (II Timothy 1:11).

II. An Evangelist is not...

  1. A Pastor. (I Peter 5:1-4; I Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; I Timothy 5:17-19).
  2. “Reverend.” (Psalm 111:9; Matthew 23:5-10).
  3. A Priest. (Hebrews 5:1; 4:14; Revelation 1:6; I Peter 2:5).
  4. False doctrine of the “clergy” & “laity.” (I John 1:9-2:2).

III. What is the “Work of an Evangelist?”

  1. “Preach the word!” (II Timothy 4:2).
  2. “Be ready in season and out of season.” - Preparation. (II Timothy 4:2; I Timothy 4:13,15).
  3. “Convince.” (II Timothy 4:2; 1-8; 4:11; 5:17; 6:12).
  4. “Rebuke.” (II Timothy 4:2; I Timothy 5:20-21; Isaiah 30:8-11).
  5. “Exhort.” (II Timothy 4:2; Titus 3:1; II Peter 1:12-15).
  6. Preservation. (I Timothy 4:16; II Timothy 1:13; 2:15; James 3:1).
  7. A “Work” not a “Career“ or a “Skill.” (Ephesians 4:11,12; I Corinthians 9:14-18; 9:16; Romans 10:14).
