Introduction. Woe - “a passionate cry of grief or despair.” It is often used in both Old and New Testaments as both a warning and a declaration of the nature of one’s condition. For a few moments this evening we will focus on some examples of its usage in the Old Testament and try to consider what it may teach us about our own need to be right with God.
I. Woe to those without a companion. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-11).
II. Woe to the wicked. (Isaiah 3:10-11).
III. Woe to the rebellious. (Isaiah 30:1).
IV. Woe to the one who strives with his Maker. (Isaiah 45:8-10).
V. Woe to the dishonest. (Jeremiah 22:13).
VI. Woe to the evil shepherds. (Jeremiah 23:1-4).
VII. Woe to the spiritually lazy. (Amos 6:1-6).
VIII. Woe to the drunkard. (Isaiah 5:11,22-23).
IX. Woe to those who encourage drunkenness. (Habakkuk 2:15-16).
X. Woe to those who pervert goodness. (Isaiah 5:20-21).
XI. Woe to the conceited. (Isaiah 5:21).
XII. Woe to those who try to hide from God.
(Isaiah 29:15-16).
