Hospitality

I. Israel Was To Be Hospitable.

  1. They were once strangers. (Exodus 22:21; 23:9).
  2. The stranger was to be treated as one of them. (Leviticus 19:10; 33-34; Deuteronomy 10:18,19).

II. Christians Ought to be Given to Hospitality.

  1. “Given to hospitality.” (Romans 12:10-13). philoxenia lit. “love of strangers.”
  2. Example of Phoebe. (Romans 16:1-2). KJV “succorer” prostasis - “a female guardian, protectress, patroness, caring for the affairs of others and aiding them with her resources” (Thayer).

III. Principles of Hospitality.

  1. When we do so to others - we do so to the Lord. (Matthew 25:34-46).
  2. It must not be for recompense. (Luke 14:12-14).
  3. If must not be forgotten. (Hebrews 13:2).
  4. It must not be done grudgingly. (I Peter 4:9-11).
