The Concept of the Daimon in Justin’s Second Apology: Text, Translation, and Notes

(Masters Thesis—University of Kansas: May 2000).  The apologetic work of Justin, the second century writer articulated an appreciation for classical philosophy not present in the earliest stages of Christianity. In formulating this appreciation Justin brought with him a conception of the entities known to Greeks, Hellenistic Jews, and Christians alike as daimones which reflected a departure from Biblical teachings and a blending of non-Christian and Christian concepts. This study includes a summary of Justin’s life work, an analysis of the etymology of the word daimon, its application in Greek, Jewish and early Christian thought, along with an analysis of Justin’s other writings on the subject.
