The Concept of the Daimon in Justin’s Second Apology: Text,
Translation, and Notes By Kyle Pope. (Masters Thesis—University of Kansas:
May 2000). The apologetic work of Justin, the second
century writer articulated an appreciation for classical philosophy not
present in the earliest stages of Christianity. In formulating this
appreciation Justin brought with him a conception of the entities known
to Greeks, Hellenistic Jews, and Christians alike as daimones
which reflected a departure from Biblical teachings and a blending of
non-Christian and Christian concepts. This study includes a summary of
Justin’s life work, an analysis of the etymology of the word
daimon, its application in Greek, Jewish and early Christian
thought, along with an analysis of Justin’s other writings on the
subject. The complete Greek text of the Second Apology and an
original translation with notes is included. [Knowledge of Greek is
not required]. Tape Binding, 8 1/2" x 11", vii, 97 pp., © 2000.
